Featured Market · Sanibel Island, Florida

There's a particular rhythm to a Sunday morning on Sanibel Island. The traffic on Periwinkle Way is already moving by 8am. People are carrying canvas bags, walking dogs, greeting neighbors. And at the back of the City Hall parking lot on Dunlop Road, something is happening that has been happening every Sunday morning from October to May since 2008 — the Sanibel Island Farmers Market is open.

This is not a large market by the standards of a major city. It doesn't need to be. What it is, is exactly right for the island it serves — more than 40 vendors in an open-air setting, offering local produce, fresh-caught seafood, handmade breads, Florida honey, tropical plants, artisan crafts, and prepared foods from around the world. On a good Sunday, you can leave with everything you need for the week.

Sanibel shells — the island is the shelling capital of the world

"Every time on vacation in Sanibel, the farmers market is a must on Sunday morning."

— A regular visitor

The market is operated by Local Roots, a Lee County organization that runs farmers markets across Southwest Florida. But Sanibel's is different from the mainland locations in the way that Sanibel is always different from the mainland — quieter, more personal, shaped by the particular character of an island where the speed limit is 35mph and the preferred mode of transportation is a bicycle.

In September 2022, Hurricane Ian made landfall on Sanibel Island as a Category 4 storm. The causeway was destroyed. Homes and businesses were devastated. The market reopened in January 2023 in a temporary location, with fifteen vendors — down from more than fifty. But it opened. And slowly, vendor by vendor, the market came back. For many islanders, the return of the Sunday market was a signal that the community itself had held. That's what a farmers market does when it's working correctly.
