It started in the summer of 1971 with a handful of local farmers selling produce under the metal awnings of what Las Cruces residents called the Yellow Brick Road. More than fifty years later, the Farmers & Crafts Market of Las Cruces fills seven full blocks of Downtown Main Street every Saturday morning, with up to 200 vendors selling everything from organic Mesilla Valley produce to handmade silver jewelry, green chile ristras, and iced lavender oat lattes.
#1 in the nation
In 2011, America’s Farmland Trust named the Farmers & Crafts Market of Las Cruces the Number One Large Farmers Market in the Nation — a recognition it earned in its 40th year, and a reputation it has built on ever since. New Mexico Magazine has named it the state’s best market four years running.
The market’s growth tracked the city’s own evolution. Through the 1980s, City ordinance put oversight in the hands of the Parks and Recreation Board. By 1999 the City itself stepped in as manager. Then in 2009, a downtown revitalization effort tore down the old metal awnings and reopened Main Street — and the market expanded into the seven-block configuration it holds today, with colorful canopies and open spaces for entertainment that have become its signature.
In 2012, the City handed management back to the vendors themselves. The vendor Board of Directors incorporated the market as a nonprofit — Farmers and Crafts Market of Las Cruces, Inc. — and completed the transition on July 1, 2013. It has been vendor-governed ever since, which shows in how the market feels: curated but welcoming, rooted in place, built to sustain the people who show up week after week.
A taste of New Mexico
Everything sold at the market is handmade or grown within New Mexico. Jewelry, metalwork, photography, glasswork, ceramics, fiber art, furniture, and clothing sit alongside farm fresh eggs, grass-fed beef, local produce, baked goods, and prepared foods ranging from traditional Navajo tacos to Southwest kettle corn dusted with New Mexico chile powder — the snack that, by multiple accounts, defines the Saturday experience.
A smaller Wednesday market runs at Plaza de Las Cruces, offering a more relaxed variant of the Saturday experience — the same commitment to local and handmade, at a scale where you can actually take your time. Both markets run year-round, rain or shine, 8:30am to 1:00pm.
What the market has always been is a mirror of the Mesilla Valley itself — the farming heritage, the craft traditions, the cultural mix that makes southern New Mexico distinct. The musicians busking mariachi or bowing pop on cello are part of it. So are the seasonal vendors who appear and disappear with the harvest, giving regulars something new to find every time. It is, as one longtime vendor put it simply: feeding your tribe. That’s the whole point.
