Tower Grove Farmers Market

In 2006, Patrick Horine and Jenny Ryan set up a market in Tower Grove Park with 13 vendors and about 500 curious shoppers. Twenty years later, it's grown into the largest farmers market in the St. Louis metro area, drawing roughly 120 vendors to the park every Saturday morning from April through November.

By the numbers

Now in its 21st season, Tower Grove Farmers Market has grown from 13 vendors in its first year to roughly 120 today — the largest farmers market in the St. Louis metro area, drawing from within about 150 miles of the city.

The setting hasn't changed, and that's part of the draw. Tower Grove Park is a 289-acre National Historic Landmark, part of the land Henry Shaw — the same benefactor behind the Missouri Botanical Garden next door — donated to the city in 1868. Shoppers wander between Victorian-era pavilions and mature tree canopy while filling their bags with produce, and on any given Saturday the market shares the park with dog walkers, yoga classes, and live music, giving it a looser, more lifestyle-driven feel than some of the region's older, more traditional markets.

What sets Tower Grove apart is what it's launched. A number of vendors who got their start selling out of a folding table here have gone on to open some of St. Louis's most-loved food businesses, including Kounter Kulture, Whisk: A Sustainable Bakeshop, Southwest Diner, Core + Rind, Made Fare Granola Co., Big Heart Tea Co., and Kuva Coffee Co. The market has a track record of finding people early — a fact its vendors are proud of, and shoppers have come to expect.

That sense of community shows up in smaller ways too. Market staff recall one Saturday after a major storm, when farmers arrived with truckloads of produce and no shoppers to sell to — and other vendors, including Mister's Bake Shop, Whisk Bakeshop, and Poptimism, started handing out hand pies, baked goods, and popsicles to their fellow vendors rather than let the day go to waste.

The market is known for being selective about who gets a table, a curation that keeps the mix genuinely interesting — pasture-raised meats, artisan cheese, hot food, coffee, and crafts alongside the produce. A smaller second market runs Tuesday evenings from May through September, for anyone who can't make the Saturday rush.

Beyond the weekly markets, the season builds toward Harvest Fest, a signature end-of-year celebration, along with other special events scattered throughout the year. The full event calendar has exact dates for anyone planning a visit around something specific.
